Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 5: 8-Bit is Enough

released on Dec 15, 2008

The story begins at the end of episode 4 Strong Bad jumps off of the couch and hits the Trogdor arcade machine. The Trogdor arcade machine grows an arm, legs and wings and comes to life. Strong Sad claims that Strong Bad damaged the 8-bit containment field and needs to order a replacement. Sadly, through an odd series of events, the containment field is broken, resulting in the world of videogames and the world of Free Country USA combining. Video game elements and characters begin invading the real world, and vice versa. In the ensuing chaos, Trogdor escapes his game and "burninates" Strong Badia. Strong Bad must defeat his fiery creation once and for all, by getting party members from other games to advance to the dungeon of the beast and restore balance between the two worlds. But, uh, anybody know how to kill a dragon?

Every single episode of SBCG4AP is a ray of sunshine in a cold, desolate world that puts a smile on my face. Homestar Runner is the balm to a wounded soul. That being said, if you asked me which of the five episodes was my least favorite, I would say this one with zero hesitation.

Don't get me wrong! It’s still super funny and I love all the callbacks! This game just also makes it abundantly clear that Homestar Runner works best when you have this rich cast of disturbed weirdos bouncing insults off of one another and unfortunately we lose some of that when some of the cast (Marzipan and King of Town, mainly) is rendered mute after being possessed by video game characters.

I will say, props to this game for having some really obscure video game references. I was not expecting a joke about LOAD“FILE”,8,1 or Hard Hat Mack.

The joy of this game is in the discovery. As the finale to the five-part Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, it throws a LOT at you.

Full disclosure: I am as die-hard of a HomestarRunner.com fan as you'll ever find. I've watched everything on the site countless times to the point that I have most of them memorized. I had beaten all of the Flash games on their site as they came out, so when these ACTUAL WII GAMES came out, there was no WAY I was missing them.

That being said, I have no way of knowing how enjoyable this game is to someone coming in blind. It's a perfect tribute to the characters that so many came to love in the 2000s, and it would be a crime to spoil the events of the story here. All I would say to a fan of Trogdor, sbemails or HR as a whole is this:

8-Bit Is Enough is the best episode of SBCG4AP, though a bit on the short side. There are moments in this that will make you puke your pants laughing. The final segment of this game introduces a completely different style of gameplay which is in itself hilarious, but the way it then plays with that style (and the tropes that often come with it) will have a big, stupid grin on your big, stupid face the whole time. But definitely beat Peasant's Quest* before you play this if you haven't already.

Now hurry up and buy it! WiiWare is dead, and who knows how long TellTale's library will be available on Steam in the wake of their demise!

Honestly, I'm a bit underwhelmed this episode. I enjoy Trogdor, and the callbacks to the previous Videlectrix games and characters from the other episodes, but at the same time I feel they could have done more with exploring the Videogame world's instead of them being mostly one screen areas or just a slightly different version of other regular locations in the game. The jokes are still pretty funny, but I can't help but feel the episode is a bit rushed and constantly trying to get to the end of the game, which is also very sudden and disappointing. It honestly feels like they wanted to do a 2nd season, but it ended up getting canned sometime soon after. Extended Play is also the worst of all the episodes. There is literally nothing to do aside from finishing off one thing for your checklist. For so much hype behind this episode, it was still fun, but let me down. Its still worth playing of you've gotten this far into playing all of the episodes. Just adjust some of your expectations accordingly.
