The Pirates of Dark Water

released on May 01, 1994

The watery world of Mer is threatened by the deadly Dark Water. Prince Ren and his companions must find the Treasures of Rule to control the Dark Water and return Mer to its former glory. Always hot on their heels is the evil pirate-lord Bloth who wants to find the treasures to rule over Mer. Based on a cartoon series by the same name, The Pirates of Dark Water is a side scrolling fighting game similar to Final Fight or Streets of Rage. The player chooses a character, from among Prince Ren and his two companions Tula and Ioz, who differ in strength and agility, but who use the same basic attacks. There are two attack buttons, one for fast attacks and combinations and one for a single heavy attack. Other controls include: blocking attacks, grabbing and throwing opponents, dash attacks while running, and a special attack that hits multiple enemies consuming life energy at the same time. Most levels also require you to avoid obstacles like chasms, falling rocks or spikes that shoot out of the ground.

I have so many memories of playing this game with my sister and brother as a kid in co-op. We would just play this game over and over again all the time.

No particularly strong feelings here, just a very okay beat em up. I suppose the stages are pretty long and there isn't much enemy variety, kind of like the same problems as The Tick to a much, much lesser extent. At the end of the day it's still alright I think.

addendum: the music is prob worth a mention. you know how the mega man x3 soundtrack is? its kinda like that 😔

A serviceable beat em up that is about three times longer than it needs to be. Three characters, each with their own attack strength and speed value. Each character has a fast and strong attack, grab that allows them to hit or throw (strongest character can carry enemies), block, jump attack, dash attack, and special that damages you if it hits enemies. Controls well, decent graphics. Some nice background elements like characters cheering, sleeping, or watching you before they join the fight. Parts where a large figure looms in the foreground then jumps into the stage to reveal it is just a normal sized enemy.

The problem is it's about 1.5-2 hours of fighting the same enemies. Sudden poor SMUP boss fight (though so short it barely matters). Poor music. Health items can be fairly plentiful and many heal you all the way but they tend to be inside of boulders that will just randomly get launched at you, some you have to hit to break and some will just break and drop it if they hit you.
