Turok: Battle of the Bionosaurs is a surprisingly competent adaptation of the Turok series for the Game Boy. It offers a side-scrolling, run-and-gun experience filled with dinosaurs, aliens, and plenty of platforming challenges. While the limited technology of the Game Boy restricts visuals and some gameplay elements, the core experience of exploration, combat, and overcoming obstacles feels surprisingly reminiscent of its bigger console counterparts. However, repetitive level design and occasionally frustrating difficulty may test the patience of some players.

I played on Medium difficulty which may have been a mistake. I found this game brutally hard and dying to a pixel perfect jump set me back a lot. The actual game is fun to play though, the movement is decent and eventually you get used to grabbing cliff edges properly. There's a lot of weapons but a lot of them feel similar to each other.

Pros: Cool immersive levels with plenty of different rooms and areas to explore. Multiple weapons to take out bad dudes and dinosaurs, as you find your way to collect magic triangle things to open doors to the next stage? It's been a while, I haven't refreshed myself on this one for the review, but I'm pretty sure that's what you do in this one, heh. It's not bad.

Cons: I recall weapon changing being something that took me a while to find out how to do (you have to hold down the select button while pressing left or right). And I recall this game just being a bit frustrating on anything but easy mode, as in normal mode, enemies take more hits before they die, and it's just more fun to run through baddies swinging your knife taking them out in one hit. So I recommend easy mode for this one, the difficulty is in level navigating anyhow, lookin' for teeny triangles hidden abound.

What it means to me: I was on a Turok kick for a good second of my childhood, so much so, that I recall my babysitter at the time pulling a "I'm taking your Turok until you behave" trick, and I swear, she held onto that Turok for weeks, and I was pissed. I wanted my Turok, dammit!
