Viper Phase 1

released on Jun 11, 1995

By the year 2050, mankind begins the colonization of multiple solar systems in search for habitable planets. However, while the colonists establish original cultures and scientific studies, many of them began feuding with each other and battles broke out among them and the Earth. One rebel faction in particular rose to great power and made Earth their primary target. Earth's response was Operation Viper Phase 1: to combat the rebels using advanced space fighters built from downed enemy ships.

fun, fairly competent but otherwise unremarkable shooting game from the school of toaplan, not unlike seibu's other games in the raiden series. fast aimed bullets, a larger player hitbox (compared to what would be codified with dodonpachi and using the C Button Cheat in garegga) and delayed bombs are to be expected. by shooting game standards it is not too hard to come by in the sates united, as with other games from seibu in the style of raiden. notable to me for being an x86-based arcade game from well before the era of "just put jamma and/or JVS on a pc running windows". a definite "play a credit if you see it" recommendation, which also extends to any of the raiden games, as this is just one of those with a Spaceship visual exterior.

(you can change the autofire rate in the service menu by the way)

Played at CEO 2023. Thought I’d enjoy this shmup more than DoDanPachi since there’s less bullets and your ship moves faster, but now the ship sprite actually is a whole hurtbox so I died even more times than DoDanPachi. Different weapon types are worthless, the bomb to counter shots with has a delay which is retarded for split-second shmups, and by the time you hit the last couple stages, classic bullshit bullet hell patterns are back.

I think I’mma stick to Galaga.
