a gay visual novel where if you DARE to stay home once you're stuck in a loop where you bang your fish in the end

i got horny and played this and fucked the teacher, the best friend, the drummer, the closeted pop star, got eiffel towered by two firefighters, and also sucked the irish guy's dick so i think that was a successful two hours 🫡

been done with the main routes but coming back to log this now that i've finished the bonus dates in full as well.

it's cute even if this felt more special/unique at the time of release vs playing it now. a few of the main routes are a flop (Phil being in the military is a letdown and Amos was annoying as hell which is too bad because both of them were hot lmao) but i enjoyed playing through everything still.

some of the bonus date characters were more interesting or likable than the main ones but it might have been the bite sized nature of their parts also?

edit: Donovan i have feelings for you. 🥺

Really tricky to decide how to rate this...

In terms of sheer joy and time spent on it, it's a five star experience from me and my boyfriend. We spent so many hours playing this in bed on an evening, cackling at the fun writing and the hilarious voice-enabled reading. It was great to have so many paths to try out. Ian's story, in particular, was really exciting and tricksy (though the ending was a bit weird). A positive, fun, sexy game. Still, in terms of gameplay and mechanics, it was quite simple, wasn't it? Maybe a little more management of your time and things like that would have made it feel deeper. (The bonus dates, btw! Oh, my! I loved getting shot by that guy for not getting his name right! And the elevator scene! What is there to say? Brilliant.)

Coming Out on Top is a choose-your-own-fate game which places you in the role of college senior, Mark Matthews (or custom name if you choose so). Mark comes out of the closet for his friends and he's ready to make up for lost time in the gay dating scene! With the help of your loyal roommates you play through six hilarious routes and ten unforgettable dates.

This game is funny and witty, it’s explicit, and it embraces all kinds of sexual relationships—casual, long-term, friends with benefits… Plus the guys are really, really hot. It's filled with endearing characters and personality types of all sorts, you're bound to find someone in here you really vibe with. My only wish was that it would have been longer.

Also the menu music is now stuck in my brain.

People talk about
Luv luv luv luv luv
And it sounds like
Blah blah blah blah blah
Cause they really mean
Sex sex sex sex

on the one hand it kind of really earnestly leans into the cringy mid-aughts college comedy film but with all the characters replaced by stereotypically fit, conventionally attractive gay men, but on the other hand there is a sequence where you get really high and then decide to shove your pet goldfish up your ass, and then you get eifell towered by the two EMTs who show up to get said fish out of your ass while maurice ravel's bolero plays in the background
(also: the emts are twins)

The Citizen Kane of western gay visual novels. The story is a simple "coming out as gay in college and start dating people" with options as inspired as the teacher, the roommate, and the jock. I chose Amos at first and his storyline was not good. I also played the other 3 I mentioned, and those were OK.

The game also includes a few random single dates, and those characters have a bit more personality. But most importantly, you are able to personalize if each individual character has facial hair and chest hair, amazingly gay. Oh, you can also date your pet fish for some reason.

Inconsequential and sensationalist queer art but nonetheless refreshingly sex-positive (and really funny!). Wish the paths felt more natural and fleshed out but as the game is meant to function as sexual fantasy more than factual testimony of gay existence I'll let it (mostly) slide.
