Ben zaten monikayi istiyordum niye triplendi anlamadim

My first proper visual novel and I remember loving it to bits. Nowadays I just think it's good but hey the girls are cute so I can look past it.

i've played this game a couple of times to get all the routes, and it's still an entertaining play!

só ladeira a baixo, traumatizada

Mf who made this was off a yerk the horror was quite genius 💀

Wanna to be longer and possibly more accessible, however is chilly and interest story when something went wrong.

A good take on a classic visual novel game(dialogue sim) with some good horror tinges sprinkled in but that wears off quickly. Just Monika.

God, they were right about the warning at the start of the game. I am someone who does not do well with horror in different mediums, for example I refunded Alan Wake 2 after the first jumpscare but since this game did not feature a traditional scary aesthetic I thought I would give it a go. But, god my anxiety was off the charts and I felt genuine fear with every line after Sayori killed herself and when I was not playing I could not stop thinking about the game which shows the impact which it had on me. Most games stuggle to get me to care about the characters but this game does everything in its power, and I cared about all the characters apart from Natsuki, probably because I went for the Yuri storyline instead. The game is not a great game, considering the limited involvement which the player has in the game but I couldn't care less as the plot is just so good and so terrifying with unsettling elements. I have never seen a game, have the user needing to delete a file in order to continue and that just displays how unique this game is. After this, I am definitely going to try and get the other ending and check out Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! and this game is a definite recommendation but just be prepared for what will occur.

A perfectly fine free VN that plays with typical codes and stereotypes of the dating sim genre to make a short & sweet horror filled experience with playful scenes and meta interactions!

I wonder what backloggd think of it...

wtf is wrong with you people

I hate just about everything about this. A shallow, vapid "critique" on a genre the developer clearly knows nothing about.

The only thing it has going for it is the shock value, but it can't even do that right. It warns you at the start how totally scary it will be, so the whole "cute but actually not" gimmick doesn't work at all, you just expect it. And even then, nothing here is anywhere close to as unnerving as say, Saya no Uta. It's safe, cynical pandering to streamers and people who think they're too cool to unironically enjoy actual stories.

bro this game is veery emotional to me and i love cute japanese girls

O puro terror com meninas bonitas

it's okay, cool plot twist and all, but didnt really leave a lasting impact on me

The script is really strong. It gives the feeling of fear slowly, not immediately. After half of the game you are shocked.
I highly recommend it. Oh, before I forget. Yuriiiii, sweetie!

It's an interesting and cool concept, it takes a cliche anime setting and turns into a psychological horror halfway through. This is a double-edged sword though, as the characters are cliches as well. Even only having watched a couple animes, I was already able to predict the characters' lines and reactions at every turn. I believe it's intentional on the part of the developers but I do find that it's hard to get attached to them.

Instead, the real emphasis is placed on the second half, which does make the first half feel like a slog, but it's not a very long game anyway so it's not a massive issue for me. The psychological horror is done very well, and the twist of who's causing it all is a cool plot point as well.

As I said earlier, the characters don't do very much for me, and the actual narrative doesn't feel compelling to me either. It's more like a sequence of horror moments with a reveal that one of the characters was behind it all at the end. I guess what I mean is that there are rarely moments that feel narratively important, as the majority of the game is unnerving character interactions that eventually culminate in death.

Stories don't always need to be packed with narratively impactful moments, as I think there are plenty of stories that have a very miniscule narrative and mainly focus on the characters, or maybe they focus on your actions and how you interact with the game. I'd say Doki Doki doesn't have so much emphasis on story, characters, or the player's involvement, but rather the horror experience.

As a last note, I believe that if you're interested in meta storytelling, namely that which directly or indirectly acknowledges the existence of the player, the player's role in the story should be more important. Beyond being cool and shocking, involving the player in the story should elevate the player's relationship with the story in some way. Monika's actions are driven out of the player's existence, so it does service the plot to have the player as part of this story, but I don't feel that it's integrated in a very elegant way. Again, I do think it's an interesting ending on paper but in execution I don't feel that it does anything beyond being interesting.

TL;DR the horror is the standout feature of this game, though to me horror is more of a supplementary feature. This game's only real draw IS the horror, so it ended up feeling somewhat shallow and unsatisfying, but still memorable. And while I like meta storytelling and find the concept of the ending cool, I also find that it banked too hard on being interesting and unique rather than leaving me with a satisfactory experience.

This game still keeps me up at night both because it’s scary and also existential dread

I´m generally not a fan of Visual Novels, but I admit that this one positively surprised me.

playing this as a 12 year old was an interesting experience

one of the most creative ways to do horror. Natsuki solos.

Well, I got the quick ending which was quite depressing so right on theme :)

haven't touched it since I first played it in 2018. from what I remember, the scares are effective, the deconstruction of the genre keeps you invested and I like the hints at more complex characters during a normal playthrough. I wish I could play the + edition's additional backstories cause fleshing out the 4 girls could really help make the game even more impactful. also I'm sorry but this game nails its aesthetics, I think they're probably the main thing that sells the bait and switch. and soundtrack's also pretty good!
