Extremely tedious but mildly addictive. I really enjoyed the gameplay progression even if it was a bit slow. By the time I was able to destroy walls, I couldn't put the game down. The map design was pretty bizarre and some of the enemies were just terrible (the fuckers who lower stats) but overall I wouldn't call Dragon Slayer anything but a good game!
Such a weird damn game but honestly so bizarre that it's a little charming. I think if you're a fan of falcom or are curious about the history of ARPGs you should check this game out even if it's only for like an hour or so. I beat the first "Phase" AKA map and felt like I had my fill.
There's technically 10 maps in the game but the objective is the same in all of them, kill the dragon and collect the four crowns.
They also don't have it marked but I played the Sega Saturn port on the Falcom Classics Collection! Very cool version with a nice little OST and some pretty nice graphics for such a primitive game.
Mostly just a low score because it's really hard to actually justify playing something this primitive outside of sheer curiousity. If you wanna play an early ARPG that's actually fantastic go check out Ys 1+2 on the PC Engine : )

I think the words "this is a 1984 RPG" speaks for itself with this one. It has obviously not aged that well but I do think it's good to look back on for its historical value. There's some unique charm in how basic it is that also allows it to be somewhat addicting but that all falls apart due to repetitiveness and difficulty. It honestly made me appreciate Dragon Quest even more.
