I still have a few gaps in my Kirby knowledge... but I think this might be the absolute worst "mainline" Kirby game. The levels are dull, the touch screen gimmicks are underwhelming, and the trying to take back the cake the Squeak Squad stole from Kirby is a boring reason for to go out on another adventure.
An extremely competent kirby game. The new powerups and the touch screen inventory are fun ideas, even if they don't always work in concept. I cannot say there's any super poor level design, or that I didn't enjoy the overall gameplay.
However, I wish that the game was more difficult than it is. Kirby games aren't difficult games, but especially compared to the games following this one, it felt way too easy for most of its run. Having a Kirby final boss, an absolute cosmic abomination, be easier than almost every single boss is downright shameful. Soundtrack isn't as particularly memorable as other Kirby games either, although the Squeak's theme is pretty great.
Great game, I just wish it was better.

Squeak Squad is a really weird game. It’s got a lot of stuff I really like and want to come back like ability scrolls, Kirby color customization, Magic and Animal. But it’s also bogged down by some pretty lack luster bosses for this series and the bubble system is kinda wack. Also this is only a problem if you 100% the game but there’s enough levels where getting the treasure chest is just picking the right door and it’s the lamest shit. Overall a fun playthrough but I can’t deny its weaker for this series
This game, along with the DS Lite it was bundled with, was pre-owned by the son of a family friend. My first traditional Kirby game, it got me hooked into the series at the age of 10, and the rest is history. It's also my first game to have played to 100% completion, and this includes the Extra Mode and Boss Endurance. Others may not like it, but it's my guilty pleasure; should I return to this game, it will not be on the original hardware.
Whenever anyone says that "Kirby is too easy" this is the game that I first think of. Despite being a fun, colourful, and quirky game this is extremely easy and truly made for a much younger audience, especially compared to other Kirby games around this era like The Amazing Mirror or Return to Dreamland. I still think it is a blast to playthrough, but this is still a "turn your brain off" type of game.
This is prob my least favorite Kirby game, cause some parts are annoying, and clearly not designed for a 2D platformer, and were instead for a metroidvania.
And while it looks good, it looks the same as a GBA game, which, doesn't make it look too impressive on context.
Also the final boss is whatever, which is a sin for this series, like how do you fumble a KIRBY final boss.

It’s hard to know how to assess this game, because it only ever wanted to be another Kirby game for people who want another Kirby game. In that respect it has the breezy intentionally low skill requirement gameplay that Kirby fans want, as well as a system for assorted collectibles and functions that add some spice to playing each level, as well as a system on the touch screen to combine some pickups to create new ones. This one also sees an (optional?) event every level where you have to make off with a large treasure chest before the squeak squad nabs it from you.
If you’re not already a sicko for this stuff though it’s hard to say this is the one to boot up to convince you otherwise, but it wouldn’t be the worst either?
The art and animations are good, music’s perfectly fine, the setup is cute, plot becomes more involved as it goes on, and importantly the game is quite fast to load and responsive which is perfect for a handheld game. Levels just fly by.
