in the past

Like almost everything Technos has ever made, Kunio Kun Soccer is a tribute to violence. It’s a sequel to World Cup Soccer, which is the American bastardization of another Kunio game.

Along with all the normal violence you’d come to expect from a Kunio sports game (namely, the ability to beat up other players to gain possession of the ball), this game offers some other interesting features. You have some weather effects, which make things more difficult by adding stuff like wind gusts and lightning strikes (which fry anyone who happens to be standing in a puddle). ALl the weather effects seem to tax the NES, however – thanks to good old slowdown. YOu also get to strategize, and tell the other players what to do, though most oftne they’ll ignore you and run in circles and pass the ball to absolutely no one.

It’s an alright game, but there’s probably much more soccer fun to be had elsewhere.
(editor's note: this game has an official English translation now within the Kunio-kun & Double Dragon Retro Brawler Bundle)

único jogo de futebol que respeito

You either love or hate this game. The closest thing to a real time Captain Tsubasa game.

Unique Soccer game like no other. After I've seen the Banana Shot it made me wanna create my own soccer game.

Unlike other Soccer Games your Team is really a Group of individual Characters with different abilities and playstyles.

Kunio Soccer is sick. You play as Kunio, the team captain. The goal is to get to the World Cup, which requires you to win around 16 times.

It's a real-time soccer game, but the "real" doesn't carry any realism, there's a lot of crazy tsubasa stuff going on and penalties are really rare, you can elbow or kick your opponent in the face without any consequences. There's stuff such as changing formations, swapping out players and weather, the latter having a significant effect on how matches play out.
The frustrating part of the game can come from some teams being cheap, having unblockable shots and Shaolin Soccer tier goalkeepers, but as you learn more tech and understand the game, you'll rarely put yourself in those situations and work ways around it. And talking about tech, there's so much crazy stuff to do. i'm sure i haven't seen all of it.

You can also play VS or the story-mode with a friend, one player controlling Kunio and the other controlling the Goalkeeper, giving commands to the team.
