I don't think MK7 deserves its reputation of being a "yeah, that happened" game in the series. I feel that MK8 owes most of its identity to this game. The controls in 8 are extremely similar to 7's, making it really easy to jump from one game to the other. Gliders and underwater driving are huge additions to the series that allow tracks to have more memorable and varied layouts; 1 lap tracks are also a great concept for the same reason. Kart customization is another great addition that I feel people take for granted. MK7 is an incredibly important game to the series, and is very fun to boot, as much as people seem to think that it's just whatever.
I actually think this is the best handheld Mario Kart game. DS easily has this game beat in terms of single-player content and... having a VS mode (I can't believe 7 excluded it), but 7 has a much better track lineup, both new and retro, and unlike DS, the controls are not horrendous. Sorry DS lol

This has always been one of my favorite Mario Karts. Insane track selection with so many incredible new ones and some of the series absolute best returning. I love the weird character roster, Wiggler's the best, and the vehicle customization was a cool idea. So many great memories with this one, even with 8 Deluxe out this is still a blast to come back to.
Online was overrun with hackers but otherwise still a nice installment in the franchise. I won't miss it too much cause 8 is practically better in every way but this def was a game I played and enjoyed a lot. Writing this review on the last day before the 3DS wifi shuts down since I played a little bit again.
Even though Mario Kart 8 replaces most of this game, the groundwork here is very impressive. The addition of gliders and water movement are probably the best new additions any Mario Kart entry ever had, combined with some of the best controls yet and a great selection of tracks; including the best Rainbow Road in the series. What a weird character roster, though.
