They really put all their resources into this game. games got great visuals and is pretty fun to play but I can't believe some people really put coins in the machine just to get one tapped twice from an ungodly enemy placement and boss carpet bombings and actually still walked away saying they had a great time on this game back in the day. If I had to have something negative to say about this game is that the slow down gets unreasonable for the engine because it stopped me from moving while on the turret.
My first Metal Slug was X (which is an expanded version of 2?). This here is the origin of the series, and right off the bat it is an amazing fun. Sure, the novelty aspect was gone for me, since i've already experienced X (in my childhood no less), but the first Metal Slug still manages to be a huge pizza of deliciousness throughout it's short lifespan. Play it!

Every time I visited an arcade place when I was young Metal Slug was always there. Together with Bubble Bobble and Street Fighter 2 they were the trifecta of popular arcade games. The game is the epitome of fun. You got to love it.
I played Commando on Miniclip a lot as a kid, and got blown away when I finally played Metal Slug. Top notch spritework and 2D sidescrolling action.
This game is a masterpiece. I can't really think of any particular negative aspects of the game, apart from like one level where the jumps are a bit too far apart.
Easily a must-play, and one of my favorite games of all time.
