Worse than the HD version (obviously). Having both Classic and Modern Sonic be 2D really does detract from the experience, and almost makes you wonder why they made the game at all. They try to do this thing where you unlock new moves throughout the game, but why keep Modern Sonic from getting the stomp until the game's nearly over already? And, come on, why are we giving Classic Sonic the homing attack? The best thing about the game is shared in common with the HD version: visiting all these old locations from past Sonic games, and there really is charm in that. But playing throught the game... eh. Just another mediocre Sonic game.
It's ok. It's just Sonic Generations but modern Sonic plays more like in the Rush games I guess.
The level design is not nearly as good tho, and classic Sonic can use the homing attack for whatever reason. So the distinction between these two is barely present in this version of the game.
It's fine. If you can't play the actual Sonic Generations, it's not a terrible alternative.

I'd say that this is a harmless little version of Sonic Generations. Short, but sweet, in spite of some small missed opportunities, especially when it comes to putting more stages from Sonic's handheld history, instead of mainly doing other stages from games that were already represented in the console version.
Also, the fact that it's a full 2D game, when they could've put Modern Sonic in a 3D setting, now that we're on the 3DS and not the DS, is also disappointing.
There's plenty of replay value here, not only with the missions to unlock extra stuff, but also getting an S Rank here is harder than in the console version, so you have more of a challenge.
But yeah, in spite of some disappointing aspects, it's a solid game.

While being a fun game and by no means bad this version always felt like a massive missed opportunity by sega to celebrate the handheld games of sonic’s past while we only wind up with a rush and colors ds level. By no means is it bad and its nice to see some levels that werent in the original like mushroom hill or emerald coast but that just doesnt save it from feeling like a missed opportunity.
No matter which version: Time Eater can eat a bunch of dicks.
I still enjoyed it, it's basically Sonic Rush 4 (yep. Colors was the 3rd). Also literally rushed on development and content. Once you beat the main story, there is no point to return at this beside enjoying whatever levels you appreciated.

The cut and dry version of the anniversary game, not much too it, I can feel the budget and time constraints but its also by Dimps so that's probably why it feels like that. very easy aside from highly questionable level design and just ungodly cheap deaths due to it. I was always curious of this version due to the exclusive levels but 10 years later I now realize i wasn't missing much due to the levels all feeling the same with minimal uniqueness, now PC mods probably do it 10x better anyway.

Functionally, the game is playable, but it lacks charm and substance. The game also looks really cheap and budget in some parts. For a PSP game like it was supposed to be, it might've been impressive, but for a release on the 3DS, it's underwhelming and boring. The level design is repetitive with cheap deaths, the classic sonic stages from the Genesis Era are 1 by 1 remakes of their original versions which feels extremely lazy. The physics for both characters are fine but aren't put to good use with the bland level design. All in all, a really mediocre game that should be left behind.
i have always wanted this game as a kid after i watched a friend play it on his ps3 so when i got a 3ds with sonic generations for my birthday i was stoked. i was then greeted with massive disappointment. the cutseans were lazy moving png's. the boost levels were only in 2d like classic sonic, and the levels were lamer. but it was the only game i had on the 3ds so i played the shit out of it. but once i got more games i threw it under my bed. i replayed it recently and yeah its still terrible. don't bother with this port.
