A game with a surprising amount of quality and intricacy than I expected going in. I can see why the game has a following and even a competitive scene.

A shop can be called "Laden" in german... "Laden" also means to load your game. So for the most time of my childhood I didn't know where to buy new gear because I thought I would load my game if I would pick "Laden"...fun memories

Crazy that Adam Sandler genie was locked away in the cave for so long.

very fun game to play i beat the entire game in one sitting which is funny but ill definitely come back to it

I beat this game without a memory card when I was a kid (I would leave the console on) it made me feel very badass

Yllätävän syvä peli vaiks tää on aika vihattu jostai syyst, paskan tutoriaalin takii varmaa

Sério, fui me acostumar quando eu tava na última fase do time do Sonic.

Much more fun and intense than it has any right being, don't understand why people didn't like it in it's heyday, sad the sequels play so different.

It was really good for a sonic fan kid

Criminally underrated racer! If you're going in expecting another Mario Kart imitator you will have a bad time, it's totally different mechanically and has its own awesome futuristic style, and even a neat little story and rival characters. These are probably my favorite designs for the Sonic cast. Riders has a very high skill ceiling and is incredibly fast paced once you learn it, the issue is that it doesn't explain how to do anything so a lot of people will be turned away by that and how brutal its AI and tracks seem at first. But man I just adore this game, its vibe is so charming and comforting. The "DX" mod for the GameCube version is actually peak gaming. It's such a shame that Zero Gravity stripped away almost all of the complexity and then the series died shortly after.

One of the sickest racing games ever made

Introduces one of the best rivals Sonic has had and deeply satisfying racing mechanics. Really should've had a tutorial though.

Sonic Riders injects the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with a high-speed racing twist, replacing traditional running with futuristic hoverboard competitions. The game features flashy visuals, a catchy soundtrack, and some interesting track designs. However, inconsistent controls, a simplified trick system, and shallow single-player content hold it back. While momentarily fun, Sonic Riders lacks the depth and longevity to make it a truly memorable racing experience.

Haven't replayed this in a long while but I'm still as good as ever. Still my favourite racing game ever made. Got the Xbox version today just for funsies cuz playing on pc can be a pain due to the setup. And that justified this replay haha.

This is a game i always wanted to play as a kid seeing info for it back in the day, which i never got to actually play until a while ago. (I was a PC-only kid and i never even knew it got a PC port until a few years ago, i beat it there and then recently replayed on XBOX) I just loved everything surrounding it. The designs of the Babylon Rogues which i absolutely adored, (Jet is just completely cool, Storm is like a cursed yet badass mix of Shadow and Big the Cat, and Wave is my first vidya crush), as well as the animated intro and 2D renders with that cool flat artstyle. Despite all it's flaws, this game is really fun and i'm glad to it gets to see some redemption in the public eye. It's funny to think that back in the day plenty of magazines were saying that this game was just a desperate cashgrab copy of SSX, Which to me sounds as idiotic as saying Super Mario Strikers is a poor man's PES 6.

I've heard many complaints about this game being hard to understand how to play, but it's actually really simple. All you have to do is watch the "how to play" attract mode video after letting the game idle for a while on the main menu, and then you'll understand that you're supposed to hold the jump button in ramps juuuust at the right time in order to jump higher and do better tricks with the left stick while mid-air. The hoverboards characters race on run on compressed air as fuel, and thus air management is also a big element of this game. It really adds a lot to the challenge, since moves like boosting, the Tornado and drifting cost air, and successful trick jumps can help you get it back. How much air you can hold on your board depends on the board level which you can upgrade by picking up coins throughout the map, and there's plenty of different boards to unlock or purchase from the Black Market which have different stats and can consume more or less air for moves. There are some items that can get you a slight edge over your rivals and help you level up your board faster, but no amount of items is going to help you if you keep burning through your air bar quickly. NEVER fall off tracks as not only you will be wasting time but you will lose your coins and your board will also be downgraded all the way back to Lvl. 1.
Even something as simple as starting the race becomes part of the skill curve, as you have manually cross the starting line just as the timer starts, and a few miliseconds of difference can either get you zapped at the starting line or get a head start over other racers.

The only thing i really, really don't like about this game is... the missions. The ones you get after beating the game where you do objectives like breaking robots, getting trick points, etc. stuff that you've already done throughout the entire game. Most of these missions are honestly just lame, repetitive and it feels like you'll never be done with them.
Originally i had a whole section bitching about how some of these required autistically hyperspecific frame-perfect jumps, in order to reach, but it's in fact not necessary, it turns out you simply needed to tilt the stick left stick in a certain vertical direction (seemingly forward for farther jumps, and backwards for higher ones) depending on the jump in order to make them more reliably, which is yet another thing the game never bothers to explain or give any indication that you're doing it wrong or right.
Unlocking stuff is also kinda grindy... The missions are barely rewarding until you've aced them all, instead of giving you reward boards right away for getting gold rank on missions you have to unlock them by getting "E-Gear Pieces" scattered on missions just so you have to replay them until you get enough to repair one, and on normal races you are also stuck with a lowly 100 Ring limit, which means you'll have to play a fuckton of races in order to buy some of the boards or get many Gold Medals in Grand Prix mode in order to get some of these boards.
The only reason i don't deem these missions horrible enough to take even half a star from my log is because they are pretty much just side content for the ultra dedicated, you don't really need to beat them for any noteworthy content outside of a few hidden characters such as Ulala from Space Channel 5 or Super Sonic once you clear all the missions.
I suppose there's a lot of things they could have explained somewhere in the game itself as well so people wouldn't skip over as easily. Sonic Riders is definitely not as 'pick up and play' as Mario Kart and can be quite rough to play with a friend or family member who isn't good at videogames, but honestly, i think all of these mechanics and not-so-accessible gameplay are what holds the game back from becoming yet another forgettable mascot racing game, and what makes the game so fun and engaging to play even on your own, let alone against another player who knows what they're doing.

Spring Canon is also burned into my mind as hard as Luigi's Raceway or de_dust2.

Pretty solid sonic game when you get the hang of tricks and the controls!

I grew up with the sequel zero gravity and never knew this game existed. When my brother and I tried to play it it was near impossible since the gameplay was quite different than what we were used to and we didn't have the manual to reference. But the courses were fun the new futuristic setting was cool. The story was meh but funny the whole time due to the cutscenes and voice acting and definitely worth playing.

Literally, and I mean literally, THE FIRST GAME I have ever played in my life. Perfect

(This is an old review that I happened to salvage. And I still agree with most of it. Will say I've gotten slightly tired of it, but I can always pop it in for a good time. Also, I forgot to mention that the game teaches you jack in the nitpicks section.)

PLATFORM: PlayStation 3 via backwards compatibility on a modded Slim
GOAL: Clear both Story Mode campaigns

WARNING: This is one of my favorite games of all time. Gushing is imminent!

Ah... Sonic Riders... I can't believe I missed out on you for this long. Published in 2006 as part of Sonic's 15th anniversary, it's a new type of racing game, headlined by the Extreme Gear. It ended up being not only the best part of the 15th anniversary, but upstaging pretty much every other Sonic game. Some may say Sonic 3, some may say Sonic Adventure 2, some may say Sonic Unleashed, but my heart is in this little racer.

MAKE THE WORLD
Without a doubt, the thing you'll notice first is that Sonic looks a little different here. Sonic Riders has some of the best aesthetics in a Sonic game, I swear to god. Everything has this sick mid-2000s aesthetic, and I am ALL for it. The new designs also look amazing, some of which I wish replaced the modern designs!

The visuals might not have aged well as some other Sonic games, but the audio sure has. The audio feels really immersive, and you can tell why a lot of these sound effects ended up in the modern games. Oh, and Omochao makes his first appearance in a 4Kids-voiced game as the announcer, and it's his best portrayal yet! Neat! Music also slaps. Just wanted to tell you.

IT JUST FLOATS
The Extreme Gear is the definitive tool for Sonic to race on. Sonic Riders takes the high-speed action of 3D Sonic and seamlessly converts it into a racing game with multiple playable characters, all with a single board. If it were like Sonic R, some characters would be horribly unbalanced (why is Amy in a car?), but Extreme Gear gets rid of this issue.

The controls of Riders take a while to get used to, but when you're in the groove, you feel powerful. You should probably look up a guide online or something if you need help, it'll be worth it! Managing to slip past the finish line at first place has never been so damn satisfying! Funnily in hindsight, some of these moves ended up making their way into the 3D Boost games!

NEW COMPETITION
Joining the franchise are the Babylon Rogue: Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross! I'm... not really good at character or story explanation, but I just like them anyway!

WORLD DOMINATION
The track designs go from fairly standard to downright brutal. Sand Ruins, Babylon Garden, and Dark Desert are soul-crushing, but getting past them feels almost legendary. I still struggle with that one turn... but that's okay! I love difficulty in level design!

THE BEST TECHNOLOGY
Sonic Riders runs like a dream. Even the PS2 version is at an acceptable framerate, which I just can't say about Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog. And the game is so polished! Even Sonic games released today don't come close to the level of polish in Riders.

FINALLY, SOMETHING INTERESTING
The campaign takes a turn that's quite interesting for 3D Sonic.

HOLY SHIT THERE'S NO WEIRD ALTERNATE GAMEPLAY STYLES OR BLATANT PADDING THIS TIME HELL YEAH!!!!!

It's the closest to a Classic game a campaign will ever get. It's short, but sweet! I also loved the story, but like I said, I'm not exactly good at explaining things. The differing characteristics and varied track designs validate the Babylon Story taking place at the same time as the Heroes Story, I suppose.

THAT ONE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
What about Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed? Well, I see that as the best racer with Sonic, and Sonic Riders as the best Sonic racer. Transformed is great, but the cars are better left to crossovers.

Keep that in mind when I review Team Sonic Racing.

THE DIRT SUITS YOU WELL
Okay, Sonic Riders has some flaws. There's a lack of tracks, some characters are rather unbalanced (sorry Cream), and... uh... that's it!

THE NEXT RACE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN
Play Sonic Riders DX. Trust me. It's the .5 stars this game was missing. It balances the game, making it more competitive, and adds some more trinkets. Also check out Sonic Riders: Tournament Edition!

EVEN WITHOUT WINGS, I CAN STILL FLY
I guess this mountain of gushing is finished, right? It probably would've been longer if I knew story analysis. Might make a new section for that later, who knows? Anyway, go learn Sonic Riders. Please. It's the best thing since sliced bread. You'll understand me more!

... Please?

Love the mechanics Top 1 racist videogame along with Nfs most wanted

This is an extremely underrated racing game, the mechanics are fun as hell and it's a blast to play. The game is pretty difficult and has a steep learning curve, and is easily the best outing Sonic has had in the racing genre. Highly recommended.
