Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor: Martyr (what a fucking word salad) is an entertaining little action RPG inspired by X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. In many ways it feels like a clone of those IP-first ARPGs of yesteryear. Unfortunately, it's just not as good as either.

Is Martyr a good game? Kind of. Is it worth playing? Only if you're a WH40k fan and even then, eh. There's more than a fair few problems that get in the way. The loot in uninteresting, the menus are clunky to navigate and you don't get to collect heroes along the way to mix and match party compositions like you did with X-Men Legends or Marvel Ultimate Alliance. So even with a few classes and a couple weapon loot options the gameplay variety is far lower than its forbearers.

The art is also much too cartoony and bright which fails to capture the grimdarkness of 40k. It's too cutesy and while 40k has plenty of goofy dumb shit and humor, the thing that makes 40k special is the juxtaposition of that cute dumb shit alongside the absolute brutality, gore and sadness of the 40k universe. In Martyr, you never really feel engrossed in that universe and a lot of the accoutrement of the game feels just like some generic sci fi nothingness. The story isn't particularly interesting, the dialogue is even worse.

So what is fun about the game? Well it kinda just does what it is supposed to. You roll through areas killing things and picking up loot and upgrading skills, and overall the gameplay loop is enjoyable enough. It's just not deep enough or varied enough to sustain the game on its own shoulders and the story isn't worth sticking through the uninspired gameplay. Bad story, bad acting, mediocre gameplay, mediocre visuals. You're left with a competent game that doesn't feel great to play or experience.

It's fine. I'd check out a sequel if a trailer or reviews looked strong enough. Martyr certainly didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth it just kinda left no taste at all.
