A stepping stone to more cinematic RPGs thanks to the use of the CD format, Lunar was one of the earliest RPGs to put cutscenes and voice acting to good use by actually putting effort into both.

While the gameplay itself is pretty typical JRPG fare of the day, mostly similar to Final Fantasy, the additional attention to the narrative through the use of the Sega CD allowed it to present an elevated audiovisual experience that put it above many of its more bland contemporaries.
