We need more 4 player co-op roguelites, that's for sure.

Spacelines presents a peculiar concept. Many compare it to the Overcooked or the Moving Out series. I would bring a more obscure title for comparison: Working Zombies, from the developers of the Picross series across all Nintendo systems.

Even though I've only played the demo of said game so far, gameplay is very similar. I imagine there are more games with the same mechanics, that's just the comparison I can make. The difference is in the roguelite elements. Working Zombies is level-based, Spacelines is randomized every run.

Every run in Spacelines plays more or less the same, with varying amounts of success. It's all about teamwork and designating roles. The path the ship will traverse is random, the needs of the passengers are varied, but the inside is always the same. I'd have liked to have random parts of the ship so it wouldn't feel too repetitive for everyone but the pilot. And even the pilot knows there isn't much variety out there.

Most events start towards the middle of the run. We really struggled with the asteroid belts, we weren't able to complete a single run because of it, and because you lose all of your money, unless you stored it in a bank if you were lucky enough to find one, it's very difficult to end up buying a better ship. We prefered to pay the insurance for a cheaper ship, which also protected the upgrades, but progress was slow and gameplay stopped evolving after the second run.

So yeah, it can be as difficult as Overcooked or Moving Out, the fun does not reach those levels though. Oh well, time to go back to Vampire Survivors.

Played for 9 hours and 27 minutes on Xbox Series S through Xbox Game Pass.
