Oh boy here we go
I just want to say I rented this game from gamefly and still somehow felt ripped off LOL. I heard and know everything surrounding this game but at the same time I really wanted to try it for myself as this game bares very heavy semblance to a lost online title that I used to LOVE called Rise of incarnates which was as well published by Bandai namco so I had a little soft spot for this game going into it for that alone.
Well I was proven wrong very quickly
JJK Cursed clash is a 2v2 arena fighter with as much soul as a ghost. I genuinely cannot believe what I had witnessed with this game and will probably remember it for a while for all the wrong reasons.
What is wrong with it?
To begin the core gameplay simply isn’t fun with very unbalanced characters and annoying moments where hits won’t land for no reason or your character will randomly turn a different direction causing an attack that should have hit to miss. Furthermore I honestly don’t understand how the game works as it does. You can do normal attacks but they do not do damage ONLY cursed skills will do damage to your opponents so 9/10 times you will get hit out of a combo you were doing for 390210391 seconds leading up to the cursed skill to do actual damage just getting canceled out. The core gameplay loop because of this is insanely frustrating and simply insanely boring to play when you take into account people learning how to combo characters together making for some very unfun matches. Right off the bat the game already isn’t in good standing as the one thing a fighting game needs is severely done wrong here. Yet it somehow gets even worse and worse as you dive more into the “content” this game has to offer.
Story slideshow mode
The story mode if you even want to call it that is one of the most laughable excuses of an attempt I have seen in god knows how long. To explain, there are NO cutscenes in this game. You will witness the story of the first season and JJK 0 ALL THROUGH STILL IMAGES FROM THE ANIME. Due to the lack of care put into “showing” the story I ended up skipping most cutscenes and was able to complete this shit show in a few hours regretting every second of it. Furthermore , there is no change in story missions at ALL its either fighting characters or monsters from the anime from point A alllllllllllllllllll the way to point B of this catastrophic failure. JJK cursed clash easily has the worst story mode ever out of all arena fighters to ever come out and that is not up for debate.
Well maybe story mode isn’t its main focus
Fair I know some games attach a story mode quickly just for more value but to its more is more focused on other content so maybe that's the ballpark with JJK. Well I am glad to tell you that is 100% not the idea with this game as there are a grand total of TWO OTHER MODES IN THIS GAME. You have co-op missions , free battle and online battles and I say two other modes because I am not counting offline and online battles as separate modes.
Co-op missions
Want to play one of the most boring modes of 2024? Well Co-op missions in JJK cursed clash has you covered. To explain, all co-op missions are is glorified story mode missions cut up into waves where all you do is …. You guessed it, they fight characters and fight monsters from the anime. It quickly gets boring so you will most likely not want to touch it after 1 run like me.
Online matches
So this is where the game should shine right? Nopeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Insanely horrible netcode mixed with a very unfun and unbalanced fighter makes for a terrible experience and I will just leave it at that. I don’t even think I had one stable online match on this game in the 10 matches I played because after that 10th match I was beyond done with this game as a whole LOL
In the end
This is one the most sorry excuses of a game I have played in awhile and I will put it next to Redfall THAT is how bad I think this game is. There is nothing for fans of the series and there is nothing for fans of fighting games here. You are paying a whopping $60 for a 3-4 hour story, terrible co-op missions and terrible online. I seriously cannot understand how this game got passed to be sold to everyone. It's truly baffling to me they looked at this game and thought “yeah this is a great game. It is truly a shame as so much could be done with JJK but instead we get the worst arena fighter to ever exist which is truly an accomplishment so hats off to you Byking I hope you are proud of this abomination that you have created. This game only saves itself from getting a .5 because this game isn’t castlevania adventures on the gameboy.
