Just a straight upgrade of the previous game. It's a good time, MC's got a cool redesign and it was also neat seeing some of the characters from the first game and how things have changed narratively since then.

It's been long enough that I don't remember everything about this game but I really enjoyed it and even though I'm surprised the series managed to become a genre-spanning franchise I definitely don't think it's undeserved.
