Lumines is a true masterclass in puzzle game design. Every element is so finely tuned, so excellently thought out, so clearly communicated, that it rivals even Tetris in its virtuosity.
It's not nearly as "clean" as Tetris is - but I'd rather play the quirky block game with the wacky timeline and danceable music than the old-man tetromino placer with classical compositions.

I remember the hype this game had at its launch alongside the PSP. I never got around to playing it then and have finally sat down to give it a chance in 2023.
Lumines is a little more than Tetris, but not a puzzle game I enjoyed. It’s not hard to figure out what you’re supposed to do, but it just wasn’t interesting to me. As someone who marginally enjoys puzzle games, I may not be the intended audience for Lumines, but overall it was just a tad boring and didn’t live up to the hype.

To me this this the epitome of the “system seller”. I was 16 years old and I NEEDED to play this game. So I bought a PSP.
I never really played more than 3 or 4 games on the PSP before I traded it in a couple years later: Tiger Woods, Lord of the Rings Tactics, and muthaph*ckin Lumines. If I had a holy list of Games Most Hours Played this is definitely still in the top 20. Lumines is brilliant. It is Tetris Effect: The Video Game; the most hypnotic game I’ve ever played and secretly better than Rez but still not better than Tetris.
