Too many hours of my life spent on this game! The review is after the final major patch update.
I was really looking forward to this game once announced and excited to design and play. With each update, the game has grown to something wonderful. I enjoyed making levels and enjoyed the world building feature. However the game has some issues that mildly annoy me:
- The main menu interface I feel is not over intuitive. Why my maker profile and my costume selections in completely different areas of the game? Me checking and customizing my profile should be in one spot.
- I cannot search levels using words like "Bowser" and getting Bowser named levels as a filter option
- I cannot copy and re-upload my levels if I want to make a change. Have to delete and re-upload the same level with a change instead of having two levels uploaded, really don't like that.
-No 100 lives challenge. Having endless mode you don't get a finale and your progress seems empty.
I had fun playing the game but my passion faded as I feel 90% of user levels were... less desirable, but that has little to do with the game itself. I recommend buying, playing and learning some mechanics. This game, at least, upskills you in gaming in general

Fantastic, even better than the first game

I think I beat the story for this but didn't touch it too much after the fact.

It's like the first Super Mario Maker but improved and with more stuff (but why did they remove costumes!?). Spent a lot of time making nonsense in the level creator and playing kaizo levels.

A game that is a lot better than the original and yet there is still a long way to go for improvements.

It's infinite 2D Mario, what more could you want?

Completed story mode, and uploaded exactly 1 level. Due to the unsatisfactory state of this game's online mode, I don't know if I'll return to free play or not.

A very nice extension of the previous title, this time with much more polish and a lot more creativity to be had.

What if we all did a ritual that only let good level creators publish

while im not the type of guy to make custom levels, i DO like playing custom levels! and man this game doesn't disappoint in every way whether it's great or horrible. the main campaign isn't anything special in terms of story, but levels are definitely really fun!

Been addicted to this game for weeks as soon as I got it, it's so fun just to make levels and ponder about level design. The 100+ are also great, it's basically a whole standard mario game even without the making.

Sadly it does become stale, but that's what the levels are for, and of course you have an endless supply from other people making them.

Yes the multiplayer is bad, but other than that, this is an amazing game with an awesome and extremely talented community. I've played so many fun levels over the years and they just keep coming. The level builder isn't as good as it was before, but it's manageable. Single player campaign is super fun as well.

This is like a BOTW vs TOTK kind of deal: the sequel is better in everything

A great sequel to a great Wii U game.

The amount of creative ideas you can do in this game is massive. Nintendo should've supported it more via more updates.

Definitely an evergreen Mario game (until the servers shut down).

One of the best mario games, such a genius idea and a ton of fun. So many options for level creation and mechanisms.

Sometimes I forget I can just play new Mario levels whenever I want. My ten year old self hates me.

Almost a 10/10 but the bad online, missed protentional of "Extra Game Styles", and less intuitive building UI make it just out of reach from reaching it's true peak. Still really, really good though!

still an excellent game with great new additions, but the removal of the mystery mushroom, the early cutting of updates and the half-cancellation of the Mario 2 theme leading the extra game styles menu to forever sit unfinished leaves this game with a very odd legacy that can't quite compare to its predecessor.

I'm conflicted on this one because on one hand, it is a greatly improved game. But making levels on the switch feels like trying to order off of those big ass screens at McDonalds. Also them getting rid of the amiibo costumes was the worst decision they could've made.

Muliplayer is hell on earth in a good way
