Pretty much, Bethesda took Quake and mixed it in with Overwatch by giving the champions, abilities. So this way they wanted to ease in new players to the series while also being hard as balls broken difficult with weapon, health, armor and other powerup pickups to control the map, especially against 20+ year veterans since the original quake back in 1996, so it kinda defeats it's own objective in a way.

Also, the game has been in early access for more than 3 years now and it's a real shame the player numbers are bleeding out. Game could have been great if it wasn't for balance issues with the "champions", a meme engine from saber was used instead of the Id tech engine used for the new Doom/Eternal, and myriad of technical issues that had been echoed from users. Quake champions only has some maps, no server browser and more console crap like matchmaking because that doesn't work very well unless a video game is highly populated!

This game is nothing but a developer mess. I don't expect Quake Champions to last on this unforgiving market.
