My favorite Dragon Quest game. It really convinced me to give the rest of the series a shot and while I didn't enjoy them as much as VIII, (even XI which I get is a bit of an unpopular opinion) I'm still glad that I explored this series as much as I did. VIII is the best when it comes to pacing its story and gameplay. Very little is given at a point where I felt "gee wish I could've had this sooner". The psyche system is still the best additional battle mechanic they've added which gives every character something to do. If the healer isn't needed yet and they have near worthless offensive skills, then pysching up to prepare a mega heal or buff is a valid tactic. It adds a fun dynamic to consider for battle, even moreso when enemies can do it too.
I know it was impossible at the time, but man Dragon Quest's charm increases exponentially with voice acting. Really wish it was possible in the earlier days. Whether the accents are charming, or cringe inducing I love hearing the well written dialouge spoken in these tones and accents. It also helps give life to what I think is still the best party in the series. Yangus especially, kind of wish he showed up in other Dragon Quest games or even unrelated games.
The quality of life the 3D version is sadly offsetted by the midi music. DQ have very love it or hate it soundtracks but VIII I feel is pretty solid... on the original release. It really is a shame there isn't a definitive release of this game.
Some late game plot pacing and some pretty poorly designed end game content knocks it down quite a bit, but if you were to pick one DQ game then pick VIII or XI. Of course my preference is VIII.

Yeah, the 3DS Version is the best version with no random encounters and additional content, but it takes a hit with the blurry graphics, sometimes bad contrast and the midi music.

Doing away with random encounters alone makes it superior over the PS2 Original, but I just wish there would be a definitive version of the game with the technical poweress of the PS2 Original and the Gameplay and Content enhancements of the 3DS Remake
