Despite this being in the Super series, Hudson really did take a lot from their PC Engine game Bomberman '94 for this title. They aren't identical or anything but it does have a lot of similarities and does that make it a great game? No, but it's close.

Super Bomberman 3 is very similar to 94 in that you don't destroy all enemies to beat the level, you have to destroy a certain object till they're all gone and grab the piece and get out of there. Some levels have multiple sections to them and there's 4 levels total for each world minus the last one.

You have the powerups you had in previous Super games but the Rooey makes it debut here for the Super games and they are very similar to their 94 counterparts. The exceptions are now there's one that does the linebomb ability and now pink can jump over tiles instead of doing a funny dance. You can even now take them to any world you want, they won't leave after beating a boss.

Now I have to say it, the levels aren't as good as 94. They are still fun don't get me wrong but something about them feels off? I think it might be the size, a lot of them feel too small to me. They also sadly removed the awesome spooky level for a lame generic Egyptian level. There's still a lot to enjoy here especially compared to the previous two games.

The bosses are now the dastardly bombers from Super 2 however you don't fight them outside of their main boss form unlike in 2. They're pretty good though like the enemies that can take multiple hits, I wish the i-frames on them wasn't so long. It's like a second or two too long for me personally. The final boss is now two forms instead of three which is odd.

The multiplayer is back and it's as fun as ever with up to five players to play and it even has that one mechanic where a loser can still throw bombs at you. Was this the first game to do it? There's even a fun minigame for the winner of a full set to get a free item before the next round starts. You know the more I play these games, the more I question how did Super R miss some of these things to add back. The only real issue I have with battles is for some reason one of the CPUs just doesn't work, he just stood still most of the time.

The game graphically looks pretty nice and they even gave Bomberman a new look compared to the last two games, I like it a lot. There's nothing too much to say here, it's just pretty good. The music is about what you usually here for a Bomberman game of this era but I will give credit that the versions of these songs sound amazing, especially the World 2 theme. There's also no framerate issues which is nice.

This game is my favorite of the Super series so far. I haven't finished 2 and I've never played 5 so maybe 5 could beat it but it is pretty fun regardless. There's a fun single player here and the battle mode is fun like it usually is. This game also oddly got a PAL release so you can even play it in English if you like. Any Super Famicom fans should pick this up if they haven't. Not as good as 94 but it's still pretty damn good.
