Kholat takes full inspiration on 3 kind of genres that are in fashion nowaday, the walking simulators (very inspired by Dear Esther), first person horror stalking games (like Amnesia) and survival exploration games. Although it tries to do several different stuff and manages to be quite interesting in some aspects (fantastic atmosphere) it's more of a jack of all trades not exceling in any particular aspect.

Still, like I said the ambient is outstanding, plus, it has good visuals and an interesting story based on real life facts and left open to interpretation. Expect a few euro jank in the basic gameplay.
