The Last of Us is another traditional zombie story that is salvaged by an incredible dynamic between the two leads that I only wish was given more time to shine. It has repetitive gameplay loops, though admittedly, they serve to give time for the incredibly well acted and voiced cast to banter. This is undermined, however, when the person Ellie and Joel are talking to appears spontaneously and disappears forever after an hour of gameplay. Stealth is braindead and the sporadic micro-movements of enemies make aiming feel unnecessarily difficult, which just promotes hiding until the enemy walks in range of Joel’s grasp. There are additional highlights besides the characters, however, namely the enemy and level design. Clickers are a brilliant take on the classic brain-eating monster and the environments put other post-apocalyptic games to shame. Overall a solid game, though I don’t quite get all the hype.
