Played through the HD Collection on Steam and with little to no knowledge about character action games, using the Collection as a starting point into that genre.
As one of the former RE4 Prototypes it still carries alot of that classic Resident Evil DNA, including fixed camera perspectives, which, while greatly capturing the haunted castle setting, are more of a hindrance in the more close quarters action orientented combat approach this game goes for. Besides the sometimes really bad camera angles though i really enjoyed the combat in this, they already nailed the combat feel in the first entry of this series. The moveset is rather limited, but every move has its unique usage and later on the game gives the player another weapon with new mechanics attached to it, which feels quite different to use. Bosses were a little disappointing, they were more annoying to fight than fun, which is again mainly due to the bad camera, worst example being the nightmare fights. The "Puzzles" i really didn't mind, giving the game more interactions with its world other than slashing and shooting things.
The Story is quite simple, but weirdly executed, i wasn't really sure what they were going for in terms of mood for this after playing it, getting really corny at the end with the most hilarious bad voice acting i've ever witnessed, still not sure if that was supposed to be funny.
To end this on a positive note though, the music was great and the game has really good artdirection both resulting in great atmosphere.
So summarized its a good but flawed game, that i enjoyed and hopefully something the next entries build on and refine
