When people say they prefer 2D Zelda, it's considered a respectable opinion. When people say they prefer 2D Sonic, it's practically a foregone conclusion. But when I say I prefer 2D Metal Gear? Everyone reacts with disgust or confusion! This is clearly because nobody else has played Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the greatest 8-bit game ever made, but I digress.

UnMetal is basically Metal Gear 4 from some bizarro alternate universe where Ghost Babel was more successful than Solid, and it absolutely rules. It bills itself as a parody, and while it is indeed very funny, it's also an incredible game in its own right. This was clearly made with a lot of love and respect for its predecessors, and it's just a genuinely wonderful experience from start to finish, with excellent pacing and creativity to spare.

Question from someone who never played MG(S) besides MGSV years ago: Are there any specific MG(S) games I should have played before UnMetal?

@Jean_le_Point UnMetal is in the style of the original 2 Metal Gear games for the MSX! I very much recommend playing them if you have the patience for older games, but UnMetal is a lot more user friendly so it might be a good introduction on its own. Ghost Babel (AKA Metal Gear Solid Game Boy Color) is the last official 2D one and it's also great. The original MSX games will both be in the Master Collection released next month if you're interested! Ignore the NES games, they're by a different dev studio and not too good. The very first Solid game is also pretty close to the originals, being 2D gameplay in a 3D space as an evolution of the series (gameplay-wise it almost feels like a remake of MG2). However you choose to play them, I hope you have fun!

@Djungelskog Thanks for your quick response <3

I already pre-ordered the MGS Master Collection Vol. 1 and after that noticed I have UnMetal in my Steam Library thanks to Humble Bundle.

My playorder would look like this then: MG (-> maybe taking a look into Snake's Revenge) -> MG2 -> Ghost Babel -> UnMetal -> MGS1-3 -> Waiting for Master Collection Vol. 2

@Jean_le_Point That should be good! Don't feel bad about using a walkthrough during the MSX games because they can be confusing at times, and if you just don't end up vibing with them that's totally fair as well. They can take some time to get a feel for and I recognize that they're very old and not going to be to everyone's tastes. MG2 is a little more intuitive than 1, Ghost Babel is a little more intuitive than 2, and UnMetal is a little more intuitive than GB, so hopefully you'll be able to enjoy at least this one! :)

@Djungelskog I already played a bit of the MSX MG1 in its GOG release and like it, but the GOG release doesn't seem to have been made fit for newer systems and hardware. I hope that this will be different in the Master Collection. Taking a guide as a help I don't find bad anyway, I rather have to keep myself from spoiling myself with the Metal Gear Wiki :D

@Jean_le_Point Yeah, I was extremely excited when MG1 came out on GOG but felt pretty letdown by the port. Hopefully Master Collection does all the games justice!

Another little question I have: Should I play Metal Gear: Ghost Babel before or after Metal Gear Solid? I heard Ghost Babel has a lot of similarities in its story and I don't wanna spoil my MGS experience by playing a non-canon game before it.

@Jean_le_Point MGS was made first, I'd go in release order. Though honestly MGS1 has more in common with MG2 than it does with GB, to the point of feeling like a pseudo-remake at times

Thanks again. I'll then play MGS1 before GB :)
