For whatever reason, God of War: Ragnarok did not gel with me particularly well. On the face of it, it's an extremely well crafted game with a high level of expected AAA polish, good character performances and fun setpieces.

But the significant pacing, itemisation, and leveling up system design problems marred my experience significantly. I really enjoyed 2018's God of War, and I thought having more of the same would be a good thing but in the end I think it wasn't. There wasn't enough innovation of gameplay to set this apart from 2018. I still find the RPG mechanics obtuse and largely unnecessary, and they only get in the way of me understanding and enjoying the ruleset with which I am expected to take advantage of. The base combat is fun, but once you've played it for 10 hours I think it stops being that, it becomes somewhat tiresome certainly by the end of it.

I really wanted to love it, and thought that I would. But unfortunately that's just not the case for me. Your mileage may vary.
