Take a look through the LucasArts Star Wars catalog and you'll find many of those games were re-skins of popular titles of their era. Sometimes this resulted in something stellar that improved on its inspiration – other times you would get Galactic Battlegrounds, a phoned-in rip-off of Age of Empires II. Despite each playable 'civilization' featuring its own unique character art, speed and stats are identical across strata (stormtroopers move and shoot just like Wookie grunts). Even AOE2, with its ubiquitous pikemen, knights, and men-at-arms, managed differentiation through a huge roster of possible units and a complex tech tree.
