A fun game with plenty of charm. If I were to describe how this game plays, it would be a mix of Dark Souls and top-down Zelda. It's an interesting combination that works most of the time, but sometimes doesn't. It features the fast travel checkpoint systems seen in FromSoft games, as well as the exploration, dungeon crawling, and item collecting seen in Zelda titles. Some elements, however, are missing from both genres. For instance, after drying, you'll still keep all of your souls instead of having to pick them up from the place you previously died at. This isn't really a problem, as I feel what's currently there works very well, and I can't imagine it being any different.

The story started out a little confusing, but quickly gained my interest. Death's Door is a critique on capitalism, specifically how it's unnatural and destroys the natural world around it to achieve its unnatural state. This is shown immediately by having the reaper headquarters resemble a typical office environment. I love how this theme plays out in the story, but I don't want to spoil what happens, as it's probably my favorite aspect of this whole game.

Death's Door also scratches a particular itch I have. There's intriguing post-game content which changes how the game world functions, and changes the player's view of it. I love it when games do this, and Death's Door does it wonderfully.

My only criticism of the game is that its difficulty is a little lopsided. Some enemies (even bosses) are incredibly easy, while others seem near impossible the first time you face off with them. Everything is doable in this game, especially once you get a feel for everything, I just wish the game had a slightly better overall difficulty curve. Also, movement feels weirdly sluggish at first, and doesn't start feeling natural until you upgrade your speed a little. Not necessarily a bad thing, but stood out as strange to me the first time I played.

Overall, a very fun game, definitely worth giving this one a try. My favorite character is easily Baul Plart, me and my friends all got a good laugh out of this dude, I love him.
