Blasphemous is a great fusion of the Metroidvania style of traversal and exploration, mixed with the combat and difficult of that of Dark Souls.

Now while there was a lot of games attempting to recreate that style of Fromsoftware games, and most of them have been good, I will say I appreciate how this one is more so a fusion of the 2 styles.

You play as the penitent one who has no character and is just a religious helmet wearing, blood smearing maniac who goes and kills a bunch of demons and holy enemies that stand in this man's way.

The game has a story. Though ngl it takes a back seat to the gameplay which is very fun and frustrating as, like any Dark Souls game, has an aspect of trial and error which can be both very fun, and inferiorating at the same time.

Boss fights range from:

Unfair and yet you can figure out the pattern

To

Pathetic and almost felt like the boss was added late into the world and should've been an earlier boss.

The leveling up of the Penitent one's abilities to use when fighting, as well as being to add more blood flasks to heal yourself (even if the healing these flasks do is barely anything).
However what sucks is you're essentially required to look for items that then allow you to unlock certain abilities. Instead of just allowing you to unlock the next one automatically after you unlock and spend your points on said ability, but instead you have to:

Find a random item that is either a item that a boss is holding, or a item that can be found randomly in the giant map and THEN you unlock the ability, but you still have to use your points... weak.

The esthetic and design is melancholic and unique which is nice to see.
I'm assuming the story is based on ether a commentary on how religion is bad, due to most of the boss fights being more Holy in appearance rather than demonic, and perhaps has a message about how, religion isn't a problem in terms of belief, its a problem when the those who are spreading the words are changing the gospel or central message to fit their narrative or to gain financial or social gain.

There are a lot of bosses who kind of show this, like the Skeleton boss who is being held up by human hands as if he's laying on a throne of people who believe all of what he says.

I dont know, I could be wrong, but like I said there is certainly a message here, though you'll probably forget the story if you yourself are playing this yourself as you'll be more concerned with not dying. Rather than hearing what the funny point green man has to say (which is usually cryptic garbage) or what the red faced pope man has to say about how you just murdered another boss.

If you're looking for a fun Metroidvania type game mixed with the gameplay style of darksouls, and being a difficult yet satisfying game, i 100% recommend Blasphemous.
😎

If you're interested in more metroidvania style games I recommend:

Bloodstained ritual of the night
Axiom Verge 1 and 2
Blood stained curse of the moon 1 and 2
Metroid dread
Metroid Zero mission
Metroid Samus Returns
Etc.

Also speaking of bloodstained, Miriam from said game appears as a cameo/ new character that the Pentinet one meets on his journey who you are able to help out by restoring a destroyed doorway to help Miriam get back to where she originally was from, so that's neat.

Like I said, it's difficult but fun, I recommend itπŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ»
