Resident Evil is the most interesting math problem you've ever solved
in Resident Evil not shooting a freak is as interesting a thing to do as shooting a freak, this is what makes it uniquely successful as a survival horror game, despite being about as scary as a Halloween yard ornament

Only game in the series to beat it on this metric is the RE2 remake, particularly on hardcore, where every individual Z is a semi-permanent obstacle and the body part you target is as critical a decision as whether to spend a bullet at all

I find that the more spacious geometry and full third person movement really reduce the amount of mental calculus I need to do. That being said all the ways they designed the game to still have that kind of problem solving in a third person shooter where it's easy to trivialize them out of existence is extremely impressive. The heavy RNG and secret manipulation on enemy health values in particular is a genius way to take the certainty out of being able to freely aim at an enemy and simulateneously move around.
