Just finished this game and thought it was ok but god did I have issues with it. I think the best way for me to describe my thoughts on Trails in the Sky FC would be best to compare it to another similar game I played this year, that being Xenosaga Episode 1. Both games are more or less meant to serve as an intro game to the later entries but while I felt Xenosaga 1 did an okay job at engaging the player, tits (lol) fc struggles some with its structure.

My first issue would be the cast. Characters besides the main protagonists basically only have development in their own chapters due to not showing up in any others besides the final one and as a result they all feel really shallow imo. Meanwhile Xenosaga 1 has almost all of the main party be featured throughout the game and nearly everyone had at least some kind of memorable scene.

Secondly, this game is long. Very long. It took me about 66 hours to finish and while I think I took longer then the average player, I’ve seen others say it took them around 50-60 which is still long for a game that basically spends the entirety of it just introducing elements to the player. Xenosaga 1 took me 39 hours to finish and the average is around 30, yet it felt like enough interesting things plot related happened while also setting things up for the next two installments. The main thing that may have extended my playtime are the fact that I did every side quest that I saw, and on that note...

The side quests are alright but them being able to expire at random times is irritating. I did all of them besides 2 because they expired suddenly without me realizing, with one of them outright saying it wasn’t expired except I was locked into a certain area due to the plot at the time. It’s not necessarily a huge deal (the side quests themselves were enjoyable for the most part), but it did annoy me.

The last thing I’ll touch on would be the combat. It’s alright for what it is, although it isn’t really anything too exciting. I got really frustrated at the final boss but that could be because I was underleveled (Joshua and Estelle were level 30 for reference). The orbment system was neat for what it was and added some fun customization options but it still wasn’t really anything too exciting.

Overall, it’s a fine game that I will say I liked but I could easily see someone not being interested in playing the later entries in the Trails series. The ending sets things up nicely for the next entry and it makes me excited to try out the next game, although I’m not sure when that’ll be. If I had to make one last comparison to Xenosaga 1, then it would be that I appreciated the game more after finishing the entire trilogy, so I’m hoping I feel the same towards this game after I finish the Sky trilogy.

EDIT: Nearly a year later and I am typing this as the credits for Sky SC roll but man playing that game has made me realize that I really don’t like this game much tbh lol. I get that the whole purpose of FC is to set up the events to come but MAN it really just set in how little happens in this game. I actually enjoyed SC which surprised me a lot after I was initially hesitant knowing my opinion on this game dwindled a lot so I don’t regret attempting to get into this series, but I would 100% not blame someone for ever wanting to continue just because of how much of a slog it is to get past this one.
