An astoundingly charming game that went on to create arguably my favorite Nintendo franchise, though it has a lot of problems due to its age that keep it from being the best out of its sequels.

The main one being that the Pikmin in this game are particularly stupid: their pathfinding is laughable and almost infuriating at times, ranging from Blues not recognizing that the easiest way to get a part to the ship is to go through the water (like they're literally designed to do) and instead wasting time to build a path to constantly needing to round up Pikmin who stray from the group because you wandered too close to a small patch of grass and lost 3 of them because they immediately become idle after doing so. This isn't even mentioning the chances of tripping; honestly, despite the game being centered around having a horde of 100 Pikmin being able to follow you, I found that the best way to play the game and avoid unnecessary headaches is to minimize the amount of Pikmin you carry with you.

But the game is adorable, unique, and this one carries the atmosphere of hostility better than any of its sequels, even the ones who try to replicate it. The only reason it gets so frustrating is because being efficient is super important and even harrowing at times, so it becomes hard to stomach wasting time simply because the pathfinding is so bad you need to create an entirely different route.
