if i had written this review when the game came out i probably would have given it a 7 or an 8 and gone on about how this game is a great breath of fresh air that was needed for this franchise. while i agree that a game like this was needed before nintendo was fully ready to jump back into classic mario party with superstars this game is quite hard to come back to.

the boards are very shallow loops and there are only 4 of them which is the least out of any console mario party game. most of them have pretty simple or lame mechanics and none rival some of the greatest on n64 and gamecube. the side modes are also quite shit with the river survival mode overstaying its welcome and the rhythm mode being way too shallow. this game isn't terrible and its worth playing if its the only thing you have but just like i don't know buy superstars. its a way better time on the same console

Not to mention the game forces you to use sideways-joycons to play, leading to several occasions where the party had to end early because of hand cramps. I wonder how different some of the minigames would've been if they just let you use the pro controller. It was a breath of fresh air at the time of release, but quickly got stale due to lack of interesting boards.
