Had never played it before. It's fine. I do see why people look back on it so fondly given doing things like 3d models combined with prerendered backgrounds and videos which were huge steps up for production at the time but thats also the kind of stuff that hasn't aged particularly well. Battle system was decent but nothing special. The story is good and I could imagine appreciating it much more if certain bigger moments weren't known just due to the games cultural relevance.
