what a perfect game. as someone who's interested in the metal gear lore, as well as the metanarrative surrounding each game in the series, i'm truly satisfied with how much it delivered on both fronts.

I'm so glad this was the last game in the series under KojiPro, the way it concludes the saga's loop is the coolest thing ever, and the truth ending cutscene is probably my favorite scene in the whole series. it's just so powerful.

I was initially planning on writing a super detailed review to talk about everything surrounding this game and such, but honestly, aside from long analysis not being something i excel at. i don't think there's much i can add that hasn't been talked about yet.

...aside from one thing, i'm super disappointed by how everyone i've seen talking about the truth ending sees it as a gloomy one. sure, if we see it purely from Venom's perspective, he was certainly robbed of his identity. But i don't like how barely anyone ties Venom being an extension of the player into the ending. Big Boss is essentially thanking you, the player for sticking with him all this way! you've been with him practically his whole life, and he calls you his best man because you've essentially been playing and experiencing all of it! even Ocelot assures him not to worry and says that "he", as in "we" can handle it! it's SUCH a good send-off to the fans -and the creators, if we think of Big Boss as a self insert of the team- I absolutely adore it.

I also just wanna mention how rad Code Talker being voiced by an actual indigenous guy is, i feel like that's something that doesn't happen often. it's super cool.

Personally I see the truth cutscene as the opposite, Kojima cementing Big Boss as a villain not just by what he did inside the games but what he did to you as the player, sentencing you personally to an eternity of PMC war and then to die as his clone, everything that you were totally forgotten and absorbed into his legacy. I see it as the opposite of MGS2, Solid Snake gives Raiden (the player) his agency and individuality back, Big Boss takes them away from Venom Snake (also player). But then I see Venom's actions throughout the game as incredibly hopeful, his true personality breaks through whatever fucked up conditioning Big Boss and Ocelot put him through and his actions become his own. Big Boss would have likely killed Quiet; he would never have had the reaction to Shining Lights that Venom did, leading to Kaz actually respecting the clone over BB. Anyway this game fucking rules

that's definitely a very fair reading, this whole game can totally be seen as a dark parallel to MGS2 as much as it can be seen as a hopeful one instead and that's why i adore it

also yeah, Venom Snake being a past medic really shows with stuff like Paz's death constantly haunting him since he couldn't get the second bomb out, as well as the entirety of the "you're all diamonds" scene. he's so much better as a leader and it's definitely cemented by Kaz calling him Big Boss for the first and only time in the whole game after that. seeing him as the one and only Big Boss

it really is a special game

totally, there's enough leeway for a bunch of interpretations, and i love it for that; my opinion on the whole game has changed more than once since release and it might again who knows?!?! but yeah i honestly think it's the most interesting game from kojima since mgs2. what a guy
