MagnificentMrMads Halloween Marathon #6
Really wanted to like this one but I just could not stand its second half. Shame too since before that SH4 has some pretty interesting ideas and I love the concept of most of the fucked up shit coming from Walters fucked up mind instead of the main character (Henry fucking sucks btw). All that said I'd definitely say Silent Hill 4 is by far the least scary entry in the original TS games, with special mention going to the burping nurses and HAUNTED WHEELCHAIRS completely robbing any tension this game has. That being said some of the new mechanics are actually pretty cool, with the limited inventory and titular room making pretty neat ways to solve puzzles (even though I find the regeneration mechanic and backtracking a bit much in the first half). Also last real positive I'll say is this game is really fucking pretty and definitely shows just how well Team Silent mastered the sixth generation of consoles (some of the hauntings are phenomenal).
Before I completely shit all over this games second half I wanna preface by saying my issue IS NOT with the Eileen escort quest. I did get the second worst ending because of my own negligence but the actual mechanics surrounding her arent bad and the AI is suprisingly solid (give her a weapon and she'll do great). I also do like the new ghosts based off the victims and Walters chasing makes for some really nice moments of combating him through the rest of the game.
ALL THAT BEING SAID FUCK THESE PADDED GARBAGE LEVELS. They weren't particularly fun in the first half (WaterWorld being my least favorite) but the revisits are so fucking pointless and obviously padded that it makes them so much worse. The forest and building revisits are especially rough, as both are really awful fetch quests that require using a rather pointless weapon to search for dolls (forest) and going through a labyrinth filled with dogshit encounters that basically mean you're fucked ending wise if you get lost (Building). It's really sad because the finale world in the outside apartment is actually really fucking cool and I like the new layout.
Silent Hill 4 is a game I wanted to like but going through it I definitely can't reccomend it. Feels really boring in a lot of areas and getting to the few cool bits is not worth it in my book.
