On paper this is the ultimate RTS game. You start in the stone age with units carrying clubs and you progress through 14 ages to ultimately end with laser robots.
Most other RTS games tend to exist within one era.
And honestly the novelty of progressing from sticks and mud to nuclear bombers is tons of fun. The games take forever though. Not quite as long as civilization, but you'll still probably take most of the evening.
And this game leans into goofy. Some of the sound effects are corny. There's lots of over-the-top unit attacks. You can make priests that summon tornadoes and earthquakes. I don't think this game takes itself too seriously, which can be a good time.

I put many hours into this game as a kid whenever I got tired of Age of Empires.
