would it be better or worse if miles edgeworth was on the case

Worse, Miles would be insufferable trying to crack this one.

now what if it was nancy

Worse too, Nancy the cop would probably be suspecting all the servants and other proles and not the nefarious cabal of aristocrats.

it’s true that Nancy loves rich people more than anything else in the world

Sam and Max would definitely solve it though.

Okay, you've stumbled into my favorite game: detectives solving other mysteries. For the sake of avoiding broader spoilers, I'll only go into how Lazarus Herst is the obvious mastermind of much of the game's plot, including Albion's political turmoil during the final three of the 11 cases. I won't reveal the actual clues or culprits of individual cases, just broad plot ideas.

Nancy Drew - I'm gonna give her some credit here. She's a cop, but when her cases involve rich people, she tends to be focused on inheritance going to the "right" rich people rather than the "wrong" ones. She'd solve the initial murder cases, but the central villains would escape. The mastermind would be able to get away with a lot of the crimes of the second half of the game, but Nancy's experience with secret societies would benefit her greatly. She might be able to stop the last two cases from occurring, but her final confrontation with Lazarus is a coin toss of survival.

Columbo - "Gee Mr. Herst, talk to me more about your past. There's a lot of details that don't make sense." If Columbo gets his eyes on Herst before Albion's descent into fascism, its over for the cults. If Columbo is only put on the case later, he gets demerits for untidiness and Herst kills him off.

Sam and Max - everyone dies except Sam and Max, Herst's defeat either involves aging to death or turning into a baby.

Dale Cooper - Cooper never clocks anything suspicious until fascism takes control. Herst's faction tries to punish him but I think his perpetual cheeriness is harder to justify punishing than someone lashing out in anger. Cooper dilly dallies too long, a lot of people die. The final case doesn't happen but, damn Cooper, you really should have intervened sooner.

Poirot or Benoit Blanc - Both would get invited to one of the early murder cases at a fancy dinner party. Both noticed a couple suspicious things here and there. Once a murder occurs, they quickly pinpoint the killers. The second half of the game never happens.

Ace Attorney - Phoenix would be unlucky enough to get killed under fascism. Miles could maybe solve things if he was at one of those fancy parties, but I think he would also get killed under fascism. Sucks to be them. Secret societies are just kind of out of their wheelhouse.

Sherlock - he can't do it. There's too much magic, it stresses him out.

L - L always dies when I play this game. Its not his fault, he's just not prepared for the social consequences of catching criminals. They always get to him. He's deader than dust.

Sam Vimes - Vimes has GOT THIS ONE PACKED IN. He arrests everyone after the first non-prologue murder. Basically none of the game's plot goes through.

Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe - Both of their methods involve missing people off. I think Spade handles this better- Maltese Falcon is all about him playing factions off each other. He wins. Marlowe's doomed.

Phryne Fisher - There's no one for her to romance, she solves the early cases mainly because its the only interesting thing she can do in these boring estates.

Miss Marple - Hard to say. If she's invited to one of the early game rich people parties, she clocks some odd behaviors and exposes the criminal publicly. If she's involved in a later case, she kind of Columbo style picks-through Herst's web of lies and interrogates his unusual background. Conspiracies aren't her forte. I don't think she gets far and she sits at home bothered about the whole mess for ages.

I got some to add, if you don't mind.

Harry DuBois and Kim Kitsuragi- Harry's Inland Empire heavily implies to him the events of Spider of Lanka and what's going on. Harry makes a complete ass of himself in all the fancy parties but because of that Herst and his crew underestimate Harry and Kim and don't consider them threats until its too late. Harry, the human can-opener, eventually has some loose lips help him and Kim into the secret society, narrowly foiling Herst's plan in a Mexican standoff.

Gabriel Knight and Grace Nakimura- Essentially the events of Gabriel Knight 2, Gabe spends most of his time bumbling around with his fellow European aristocrats trying to get into the secret society while Grace does most of the actual research and leg work. Thanks to Grace, they also just manage to stop Herst at the last second.
