While the combat is pretty stellar, it misses a few elements that could have strengthened the overall experience. Let's start with the combat. Of the three characters, V was the least fun for me to control, although I still enjoyed his gameplay. Dante and Nero were very fun to use, and the combo meter really adds to the chaos, just like the series has always done. It's the most versatile and rewarding combat in the series. It could benefit from a few more standout boss fights or some more enemy types, but the multiple characters help out a lot. Exploration is fun, as it never gets too complex to be annoying. Some more gimmicks or interesting moments of platforming or environmental manipulation could have been cool as well. However, I have a few issues with art direction and tone. To be specific, many areas look very samey. Many levels are spent in a large demon tree, and they blur together quite a bit visually. There's a real lack of visually memorable locales, which I found disappointing. The colors also seemed pretty desaturated a lot of the time. Then there's the tone. While it does have a lot of dumb moments the series is known for, it has a lot of melodramatic ones that don't feel wholly earned in my eyes. The story is enjoyable, I just wish it leaned more into absurdity. This review was mostly complaining, but that's just because I quite like this series. There's a lot of things 3 did very well that this one slipped up in a bit, but it is more than worth playing for it's cheeseball music, enjoyable story, and the great combat.
