Final Fantasy VI is really good for a few hours, but like 25% through the game you'll already have some of the best attacks and there's never any reason to do anything else because the game's combat system has less depth than Pokémon.
Unfortunately the story and cast can't make up for what the gameplay lacks as most of the characters are uninteresting or only get about 2 minutes of character establishment and development.
It's strange that the story moves at such a fast pace yet the game feels like such a slog. There's barely any time for build up or reflection, it's just big event after big event and while that's exciting at first, I soon found myself asking why should I care?
This isn't to say the game is completely without merit. The first half of the game is enjoyable enough, Kefka is an entertaining villain and the soundtrack is amazing, as expected for a FF game.
Some of the big moments are really good. The poisoned water, the opera show, Celes on the mountain and the ending of the game are all pretty good scenes.
It's obvious I don't see what everyone else sees in this game and that's a shame because I was really excited to play it, but unfortunately it just wasn't for me.
