A Review by a casual Tekken fan.

This is by far the best and most robust fighting game I’ve played in the last few years. Even preferring MK over Tekken, I think 8 has some of the most fulfilling gameplay and more content than the previous MK titles.

Since 3, Tekken has always been a staple of fighting games for me. The gameplay here is still very similar (imo) to where it really flourished back on the PS1 with 3, but it has grown a little more complex. I think that’s in part to the series evolving, more characters being added and such. That’s something I genuinely love, because playing Jin feels like the same Jin from 3, but the moves have sharpened and changed a little which also adds to the growth of the character. This allows for hard core players to fit into each game like a glove when their mains make it to the sequels.

The cinematic story didn’t get much out of me. Even as a fan, the lore of Tekken has always been complicated and something that never sucked me in. I think I enjoyed the Arcade concept more though, because you can choose your character and there isn’t a ton of repetitive fights with cinematics stuffing the holes in between bouts.

There is honestly, just a lot of content here and a lot to play with! Standard 1v1, arcade stories, the arcade journey, the cinematic story mode, Tekken ball. The list goes on.

Tekken 8 also adds something I’ve been begging for the MK series to have since MKX and that is the jukebox feature. Being able to customize your games soundtrack in detail with the options of all Tekken games was something especially warming.

When it comes down to it, Tekken 8 was made with its fans in mind. It’s one of the most satisfying fighting games in years with lots to do, a complex but fully robust fighting system, a roster that is choice, and the freedom to really make it the Tekken experience you want.
