Live A Live is a rather unique take on an RPG. Rather than one long campaign, the game is spit into a series of micro-campaigns that each take between 30 mins and a few hours to beat.

There is a lot of variety here, and despite the short runtime of each campaign, the characters in almost all of the campaigns are well thought out, realized, and have good character development. Shoutouts to Distant Future in particular which while having zero combat, tells a gripping story with some really touching moments.

There is only one chapter that feels like an outlier in this regard, which takes 30 mins and is just a series of fights with little else.

Combat is fought in a turn-based grid system and I'd describe it as a mixed bag, some chapters it is more of a means to an end, other times it is pretty engaging. Typically chapters that are fought solo have less strategic depth than ones where you have a proper party. The system is mechanically really sound, but due to the short length of each campaign, the combat system often doesn't get really up and running until it's too late

Definitely one of the better RPGs I've played recently. It's a loving tribute to the original which preserves pretty much everything that made it great, with a wonderful new coat of paint. The voice acting and HD-2D style greatly enhance the experience.

A novel concept that is executed almost flawlessly
