Watching One Piece since my childhood and still being up to date with the manga i was really looking forward to this anniversary game. And to make a JRPG-turn-based OP game seems like a fresh and good idea.

Sadly this game has a lot of flaws that even a OP fan can't look over. It has terrible pacing and weird lengths and then super short sections that seem like confused development was at work. Like they wanted to make everything big and thought out but then kinda didn't anymore.

The biggest problem though is probably the combat system. While the idea is great it is way to simple and easy and just takes so much time even on sped up attack animations. The attacks look great but after not even half the game the fights just seem like work and a pain to get through.

It's nice that a lot is voiced in the jp original dub and the characters are all how they should be. But at every point the game just wants to slow you down and tell you what to do and sometimes gives you to little information on what to do.

It's weird and as that is the story. Relying on former arcs is a common thing in anime games and the spin of having the characters reexperience their journeys while knowing anything sounds better than it was executed.

The big moments just don't happen or are not as impactful as in the og material or other games.

It's sad but we got again a mid OP game and (at least for me) Pirate Warriors 3 and 4 still hold the place of best One Piece games to date.

I think a sequel to Odyssey with less jank, less slow down, more original story line and better pacing would be interesting though. But yeah, that needs a lot of work...
