It's definitely a challenging game, but in no way is it bad. It experimented a lot, like a lot of NES games did in this time. Furthermore, it introduced a lot of stuff to the series, like magic and spells. It is very obtuse, for sure, but using the leveling system, you can overpower enemies fairly quickly. It definitely doesn't deserve the hate it got back then.
