This game is just Pikmin 1 if it's bullshit moments were more endearing.
I find this game's story to be incredibly funny, Olimar finally gets home to Hocotate after fixing his ship and then it's IMMEDIATELY sold and he has to immediately back to PNF-404 because the company he works for is in massive debt and he needs to collect treasure. This game also boasts the inclusion of Louie! I hate him, enough said. I do like the President though, I think he's funny.
This game is really just Pikmin 1 but better in terms of gameplay. Mechanics were refined, purple and white Pikmin were great inclusion to not only killing enemies, but getting treasures. Ultra spicy and bitter spray were also great inclusions to making things go by faster and making killing things be easier, because this game is ROUGH. There are caves in this game, consisting of multiple sublevels and they can range from manageable to fucking off the walls-who-thought-this-idea-was-good. Pro tip if you're ever encountering one of the latter sublevels: punching with your captain is a viable strategy. You can also just throw purple pikmin at most normal enemies and they will be massacred at the purple gods. I also love the inclusion of the treasures, ranging from cool Nintendo references to product placement I just adore. The bosses in this game are especially rough too, especially the final one, which takes TOO DAMN LONG. But i promise you, it's worth it.
The music is also good, and very nostalgic to me specifically. Awakening Wood holds a very special place in my heart.
While Pikmin 1 was the actual beginning, I would say this is when Pikmin REALLY starts, and don't worry about it's difficulty and unfairness, I believe in you! Even if you and your Pikmin are getting crushed by the Water Wraith.
