I don't remember dying as much as I have playing all the other RE games, even in the 1st remake that has the same base mechanics of tank controls, fixed camera angles, and no proper aiming. The game just loves to throw a bunch of enemies at you, and there are way too many instances where you get attacked the moment a cutscene ends, when you enter a room, or when you turn a corner. And in a series with a bunch of bad boss fights, this one takes the cake, with that giant bat as the shittiest of them all.

The absence of a storage box only made item management even more tedious. Because of the higher difficulty in this game, it made me play much safer than usual, which meant doing a ton of backtracking to rooms where I left items and save constantly just to avoid having to redo lengthy sections because I got killed in an encounter I wasn't ready for.

The character switching feature is interesting, but I don't think it manifested in any particularly interesting gameplay moments. Anything that could be "interesting" are scripted scenes. The puzzles that required it all felt more contrived than your typical RE puzzle fare, as most of them are pretty straightforward. I guess it was pretty satisfying at times to have both characters just dump on zombies simultaneously.

The biggest sin is that there is the expected terrible acting and ridiculous scenarios but there's just none of the charm of the other RE titles. Billy is a poor attempt at a "cool, mysterious badass" with a boring design, and his backstory is a precursor to the racist bullshit in RE5. Rebecca also doesn't have anything going for her, as I don't count just constantly being concerned about Billy as a personality. Marcus is a nothing villain.

At the very least, this remaster looks pretty damn good. Too bad it doesn't have any of the atmosphere of the other games, and it's not even remotely scary.

Any enjoyment I have for "classic" Resident Evil begins and ends with the HD remake of the first game, and I'm glad the series has moved on from this kind of tedium.
