Lets get the obvious out of the way first - the famous tilt controls and steering wheel accessory (which all the box art wants to plug) don't work very well. Wiimote + num-chuks works better, though unfortunately with it the trick system would have you shaking the controller all the time to get boosts. The game also introduced motorbikes, which I never liked much either. Overall, I thought this game was a step down from Mario Kart DS, and didn't spend nearly as much time with it.
