Apotheon is novel. Having a game that looks like old greek vase painting is just a super neat thing. You got ample boobs and peepees on display throughout the game and all the dudes have STACKED ASSES. During the action, arms and legs all rotate on their hinges so they conform to the constant side perspective. It's quite effective at pulling off that aesthetic. The actually gameplay is a bit more frustrating and dull after a while. All the combat interactions are frustratingly physics-y. The weapons do set amounts of damage, but getting a hit with a melee weapon involves swinging your right thumbstick in a way that never feels impactful. I'm sure some people have fun messing around with that, but in my experience swinging my swords and throwing firebombs always felt super inexact. And it's not helped by the fact a majority of the enemies seemed to have no issue dodging most weapons I threw and moved around as if possessed by Sonic the Hedgehog. I would give Alientrap credit for at least diversifying their boss battles. I never knew what was going to happen once I found my next boss encounter between scenarios like a battle during a horse race, one where you and the opponent take turns hunting each other, or an obstacle course with trick shots. Cool look, boring story, gameplay that has its moments.
